Grigor Dimitrov looks to seal his fairytale run here at Miami Gardens, but one last hurdle remains - will the imposing Jannik Sinner close the door on the Bulgarian's journey to extend his own record-breaking season?
Dimitrov vs Sinner
At 32 years old, Grigor Dimitrov is enjoying some of the best tennis of his life. By defeating World No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz in a scintillating straight-set display and showing his grit to push through a tough three-set battle against Alexander Zverev, a player who he hadn't beaten in 7 consecutive tries since 2014, Dimitrov is now back in the top ten for the first time in six years. This miraculous resurgence is being relished by both fans and tennis pundits alike. He is now only one step away from the Miami trophy and a second Masters 1000 title. However, this last step is going to be by far the most challenging one.
Jannik Sinner has arguably been the best player of the last few months. He has only lost one match this year to a redlining Carlos Alcaraz, and Dimitrov will need to muster up something extra special to try and make the Italian uncomfortable. But this will not be an easy task; the World No. 3 has created a certain aura of invincibility around him that is unable to be penetrated by even the fiercest of competition. His brutal disassembly of fourth seed Daniil Medvedev in the semi-final was a perfect demonstration of this. While many expected their encounter to be close, Sinner brushed him aside for the loss of only three games to close out a statement victory. Although Medvedev didn't play his best, a lacklustre performance accentuated by 22 unforced errors, it equalled the worst loss of his career (the last and only other time he had won just three games in a match was in the 2019 Montreal Final against Nadal).
Although Grigor is playing incredible tennis, it's hard to see him beating the favourite here. His endurance has definitely deteriorated as the tournament has worn on; he looked dead stamina-wise against Zverev after the second set tiebreak, but did extremely well to grind through the third. But that wasn't the first time he looked exhausted in the tournament. Dimitrov is notorious for tiring out in the latter stages of events, something that concerns the deep-rooted endurance issues that have hindered him throughout his career. And at 32 years of age, it definitely isn't getting easier. In order avoid any sticky situations on Sunday, the Bulgarian will have to play first-strike tennis. He will have to take the ball exceptionally early, consistently hit over his backhand and essentially outhit Sinner so he can preserve his energy by keeping points short. Unfortunately outhitting Sinner right now just seems impossible to do.
Sinner is pretty much a horror matchup for Dimitrov, because Grigor's slice backhand simply travels slower through the court and gives Sinner too much time to crank his groundstrokes at full pace. The Italian will make sure to keep plugging away at Dimitrov's backhand hard and fast, and will capitalise immediately on any slices to swat the ball away. Time is something you simply cannot give Jannik Sinner, especially with the calibre of his ball-striking. I fear that the Bulgarian will be pushed around too much by the velocity and weight of Jannik's ball, which will only be made more agonising due to how little gas he has left in the tank.
The proverbial 'straw that breaks the camel's back', I believe, is the conditions. The final as usual is conducted as a day match, with hot and humid conditions along with plenty of sunshine covering the court. This benefits Sinner in two ways: one, his shots will travel faster and livelier through the court, pushing Grigor onto the back foot. This stands in stark contrast to his quarterfinal match against Alcaraz, where the Spaniard couldn't hurt him due to how low and slow the ball bounced in the deadened night conditions. Secondly, the unforgiving heat will only heighten Dimitrov's struggles in terms of stamina. The older man will find it difficult to perform at his best under the sweltering temperatures given his endurance issues as of late.
Overall, all factors point to Jannik Sinner securing this one. I'm confident in picking the Italian to blast to a second Masters trophy.
Prediction: Sinner in 2
